Become a Resource for the 134th General Assembly

By Katie Johnson posted 01-11-2021 10:44 AM

Last week, the Ohio House and the Ohio Senate convened to swear in the members of the 134th General Assembly. The Democratic and Republican Caucuses of each Chamber will hold member-only meetings (or retreats) this week to discuss priorities and welcome newly-elected members, among other things. Priority legislation for leadership in each chamber will quickly follow these meetings.

Please take this opportunity to become a resource to your local representatives in the House and Senate. This is a pivotal time for public education in Ohio. We have the opportunity to work with the 134th General Assembly on the future of school funding, including our initiatives related to the Fair School Funding Plan and performance-based EdChoice vouchers, among others. It is extremely important to contact your local legislators now to establish (or re-establish) a relationship to further these initiatives, as well as to inform discussions as we head into the biennium budget.

Please call, email, write a letter, schedule a meeting, or any combination thereof, and offer to be a resource to your representatives in the House and Senate on school funding-related issues and questions. Collaborating with your superintendent on this outreach is strongly encouraged as it is very powerful to have a strong treasurer/CFO and superintendent team when discussing issues with your local representatives and others in your community. To assist in this effort, a sample letter for use as a template can be found in the Advocacy Hub Library.

Unsure of who the elected officials who represent your district are? We have you covered in the Advocacy Hub with simple tools to looks up legislators by address or school district, and spreadsheets with full contact info.
