How many years have you been in the school business profession?
20
How did you first learn about and then become involved in the school business profession?
I was a state auditor for 6 years prior to becoming a school treasurer. Of all the entities that I audited, the schools were the most involved and most interesting so I chose to get my license and apply for some local openings.
What is your proudest career accomplishment?
Working with and networking with the NWOHIO school districts. As a chapter officer I was able to encourage fellow treasurers to network and meet regularly to trouble shoot issues and generally support each other. I am proud of the close working relationship that I have with all of the treasurers in the NW region.
What do you feel is the most important part of your job?
Questioning everything that comes across your desk! Know why you are doing what you are doing and making sure it is the best for your district. I have many times questioned requests from ODEW and pointed out issues that have resulted in our district benefiting, where, if I had not, we would have missed out on benefits we were entitled to. The CFO must be a financial cheerleader for the district.
What is one thing you feel makes your district unique in the state?
We are a small rural district in NW Ohio. Many of our students are not college bound students. 10 years ago we started offering a skill trades class for students to be introduced to the various trades (i.e.. carpentry, plumbing, electrical, welding, etc.). This program has resulted in many students going on to trade schools or entering the workforce with a skill set that benefited them right out of high school.
What is at the top of your professional bucket list?
RETIREMENT!! I have participated in many organizations during my professional career and am now ready to step back from day to day responsibilities. Now I would like to help the profession by being available to train and help new treasurers.
What is something your colleagues would be surprised to learn about you?
I started my working career as a florist! I attended Michigan State University and majored in Commercial Floriculture. I quickly found out I don't like working over the holidays so I changed course, went back to school at the University of Toledo and obtained my Bachelor degree in Accounting.
If you were an animal, what animal would you be?
Never considered being an animal. Not sure!
Favorite TV Show?
MASH and NCIS
Favorite Movie?
Animal House
Favorite Food?
Anything Italian
What is one of your favorite expressions?
Just because it has always been done that way doesn't mean we need to keep doing it that way!
When someone finds out what you do, what's one of the first questions they always ask you?
You get summers off, right?!?
What has been the best, or your favorite part, of being involved in OASBO?
Definitely the opportunity to network with fellow treasurers and vendors in the business. Every session I attend I come away with at least one ahh-ha moment and learn something new to help the district or keep it compliant. Being introduced to the vendors and having an opportunity to learn about the programs they offer has been great too. When the district has a need, I usually already know someone we can talk to.
