How many years have you been in the school business profession?
20 as a treasurer and nearly 31 with government finance.
How did you first learn about and then become involved in the school business profession?
I first became familiar with the school business profession while working at the State Auditor's Office in the Local Government Services division. In that role, I assisted many schools with GAAP conversions and had the opportunity to work closely with numerous school treasurers. Several of them recognized my skills and thought I would be a great fit for the profession, encouraging me to pursue licensure. Their support and guidance played a key role in my decision to transition into school finance, and I’m grateful that those early connections helped me successfully enter the field.
What is your proudest career accomplishment?
My proudest career accomplishment is having the opportunity to mentor new treasurers and support their growth in the profession. Just as I was guided and encouraged when I first entered the field, I take great pride in giving back by helping others navigate the challenges of school finance. Seeing new treasurers gain confidence, develop their skills, and succeed in their roles is incredibly rewarding. Knowing that I can make a positive impact on their careers, just as others did for me, is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my work.
What do you feel is the most important part of your job?
The most important part of my job is working collaboratively with the Board of Education, administrators, teachers, and staff to make a meaningful impact on students' education. While financial management is a key responsibility, the role goes beyond just dollars and cents. It’s about thinking outside the box to find creative solutions that support student success. Ensuring that financial decisions align with educational goals allows us to provide the best possible opportunities for students, and that’s what makes this work so rewarding.
What is one thing you feel makes your district unique in the state?
One thing that makes Mohawk Local Schools unique in the state is its strong small-town feel, where everyone knows everyone. This close-knit community creates a supportive environment where students, staff, and families all work together for success. In times of need, our community rallies around the school, demonstrating an incredible level of support. I’m especially grateful for our PTO and Booster groups, whose dedication and generosity make a lasting impact on our students and programs. Their involvement truly sets our district apart.
What is at the top of your professional bucket list?
At the top of my professional bucket list is continuing to mentor new treasurers. With a strong need for qualified professionals in this field, I believe it’s essential to support and guide those entering the profession. Just as I was mentored when I started, I want to pay it forward by helping new treasurers develop their skills, gain confidence, and navigate the challenges of the role. Ensuring the next generation of treasurers is prepared and successful is something I am truly passionate about.
