How many years have you been in the school business profession?
Six
How did you first learn about and then become involved in the school business profession?
Most of my clients with the Auditor of State's performance audit division were school districts. I got to meet treasurer/CFOs from across the state and learn about the unique challenges each district faces. I decided to further my career by taking OASBO courses and eventually get my treasurer's license so I can relate to my clients. I ended up becoming a treasurer within a month of getting my license, and I am glad to be able to make a difference every day.
What is your proudest career accomplishment?
Guiding my first district out of fiscal distress in my first year. We were able to do so without a RIF or a levy. I was able to directly apply what I learned at the Auditor of State to a real-world situation for the betterment of the district.
What do you feel is the most important part of your job?
Being able to explain complex topics in an easy-to-understand way. Every day we get questions about finances from those not in our business. It is important that they understand the nuances of our world without getting bogged down in the weeds.
What is one thing you feel makes your district unique in the state?
We are a growing district, with new residents coming by the thousands, along with a well-established community that has been here for generations. We have to make decisions that honor our past while meeting the needs of today. This dynamic is expressed in our motto: Value the past, invest in today, elevate the future.
What is at the top of your professional bucket list?
Make a positive impact on public education policy that helps all students in our state.
What is something your colleagues would be surprised to learn about you?
I am a certified Australian rules football referee (not rugby).
If you were an animal, what animal would you be?
A cat - make an appearance when I want to and sleep otherwise.
