Earlier in December, the Department of Energy held a webinar regarding a 2022 Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) for Energy Improvements for K-12 schools. The webinar addresses the first round of $80 million in grants for energy improvements under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s “Renew America’s Schools” Grant Program. Access the powerpoint slides from the webinar here.
The DOE plans to allocate 20-100 grants, prioritizing high-need/low-income and rural schools, ranging from $500,000 to $15,000,000 awards. There are two key areas that are eligible under the grant program:
- High-Impact Energy Efficiency and Health Improvements - Projects must result in direct reduction to school energy costs and increase energy efficiency, and lead to improvements in teacher and student health (including IAQ).
- Innovative Energy Technology Packages - Projects could include any improvement, repair, or renovation to a school that incorporates two or more of the following energy improvements:
- Energy efficiency measures; installation of renewable energy technologies; alternative fuel vehicle infrastructure on school grounds; and/or purchase or lease of alternative fueled vehicles to be used by a school.
