Gov. Mike DeWine today issued guidance for the reopening of K-12 schools for the 2020-21 school year. The guidance focuses on the following five areas that schools are recommended to comply with:
  • Assessment of symptoms;
  • Washing and sanitizing hands;
  • Cleaning and sanitizing surfaces;
  • Social distancing;
  • Face coverings.
The governor’s lone directive addresses the requirement that school employees wear facing coverings, with limited exceptions. Students are not required to wear face coverings, but DeWine recommended students in third grade or higher wear face coverings. In his press conference, DeWine specifically thanked our three associations for contributing to the process of reopening schools.
DeWine also acknowledged the new costs facing school districts in the upcoming school year and pledged to work with the General Assembly to provide additional funding to schools from Ohio’s share of CARES Act funds. DeWine indicated an announcement on this topic may occur as soon as next week.
Our three associations issued a statement in response to the governor’s announcement. Click here to access that statement.
