How many years have you been in the school business profession?
23 years
How did you first learn about and then become involved in the school business profession?
I began my career at the district I graduated from, working as a library aide and assistant treasurer. During that time, Pat Williard from ODEW visited to assist our newly hired treasurer. After observing my work, Pat encouraged me to pursue my treasurer's license - a recommendation that brought me to where I am now.
What is your proudest career accomplishment?
I have been consistently recognized with Auditor of State Awards for exemplary financial reporting and accountability.
What do you feel is the most important part of your job?
The most important parts of my job are working effectively as a team and being fully transparent with finances. I believe collaboration is essential for achieving shared goals, and financial transparency builds and keeps everyone aligned. If you don't tell the story of your numbers, someone else will, and you won't agree with it.
What is one thing you feel makes your position unique in the state?
Our district is unique because, while it's a small and close-knit community, the state perceives it as wealthy due to the resort atmosphere surrounding Buckeye Lake. However, over 70% of our student population is considered low-income, which presents a set of challenges for our schools and funding.
What is at the top of your professional bucket list?
I would like to present financial information and topics in a clear and understandable way to non-financial audiences, as well as mentoring new Treasurers.
What is something your colleagues would be surprised to learn about you?
That I do not speak fluent Spanish.
If you were an animal, what animal would you be?
Jaguar
Favorite TV Show?
Bridgerton
Favorite Movie?
Anyone But You
Favorite Food?
Mashed potatoes!
What is one of your favorite expressions?
¡Hijole! (Mexican Spanish used to express surprise or "WOW" or "oh my goodness")
When someone finds out what you do, what's one of the first questions they always ask you?
Do you get your summers off like teachers?
What has been the best, or your favorite part, of being involved in OASBO?
My favorite part of OASBO is the incredible people I've met and the wealth of resources available to support ongoing professional learning.
